V. We interviewed individuals to see what their response would be to my plan. Their responses are as follows. In general, the people we interviewed thought that the drinking age should be lowered to 18 years old for several reasons. For the fact that we are 18 years old and eligable to go into the draft and get killed, we should also have the right to consume alcahol. The majority of other countries drinking age is 18 and they don't have issues with drinking, so why isn't ours? It will take away the thrill of breaking the law and binge drinking, making it less taboo. Teenagers would drink in moderation and be allowed in places where drinking is regulated and supervised, decreasing alcahol related risks. Setting the drinking age at 21 does not decrease the alcahol related accidents, people who choose to drive are stupid regardless of a 3 year age difference. the government would make more money off of alcahol if the drinking age were lowered.
VI. Our answers, based on our research, to their objections and concerns are:
18 year olds aren't as responsible as 21 year olds and don't understand everything at risk when drinking. 18 year olds binge drink more than 21 year olds and suffer more alcahol abuse. There would be more alcahol related car accidents if the drinking age were lowered.
